The CEAS Rotorcraft Committee
Who?
The Rotorcraft Committee is a group of individuals from a broad range of rotorcraft industries, research establishments, operators, governmental agencies and universities of the constituent member state societies. Most of the members are holding leading positions within the organisations where they are employed.
Why?
The Rotorcraft Committee has been formed with the aim of promoting the importance of rotorcraft and to encourage & foster interest in this field.
What?
The scope of topics covered by the Rotorcraft Committee includes typical rotorcraft related design issues (like aero-, flight mechanics, dynamics & acoustics), airworthiness (review of new legislation), flight & mission operations (ranging from flight safety to accident investigations), maintenance support (covering health & usage monitoring) & pilot training (both knowledge based & skills driven).
The committee supports the organisation of the European Rotorcraft Forum ERF and the publication of peer-reviewed ERF papers in its CEAS journal. Furthermore, special interest is focused on the motivation of young people to be further engaged in rotorcraft related activities.
Future trends
An increasing number of rotorcraft is entering into service. European rotorcraft industry is a worldwide market leader. To continue the success and competitiveness of our world class industry, we need to increase the public acceptance and strengthen the European rotorcraft design & research infrastructure.
A number of challenges face the rotorcraft community at present:
– Improvement of integration of rotorcraft into civil airspace.
– Greening of rotorcraft and its operations (achievement of the Vision 2020 targets): rotorcraft fuel burn, noise & emissions significantly have to be reduced.
– Condition based in-service support & maintenance.
– European rotorcraft licensing regulations and zero flight time training.
– Improvement of rotorcraft safety records as compared to safety records of the fixed wing community.
Information on rotorcraft is provided to CEAS members through the society’s newsletter and journal.
The European Rotorcraft Forum ERF
European Rotorcraft Forum ERF
The European Rotorcraft Forum https://rotorcraft-forum.eu/ is one of the premier events in the industry’s calendar bringing together manufacturers, research establishments, academia, operators and regulatory agencies to discuss advances in research, development, design, manufacturing, testing and operation of rotorcraft.
The ERFs are special events for the international rotorcraft community and many of us might even remember past ERFs as significant milestones in our careers – maybe the first public presentation for a PhD student, or a report on a multi-national collaborative research venture, the description of new technologies or operational capability for a development programme or the first announcement of new draft regulations. All these things and more can be found in the rich portfolio of a typical ERF. The ERF International Committee, responsible for the technical programme of the Forum, aims to provide a window on the rotorcraft world, to stimulate discussion and even provoke innovation.
The Forum takes place annually across Europe, rotating around the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Russia. The ERF is being organized by the various national aeronautical societies and co-batched by CEAS. The first ERF was held in Southampton, England, in 1975.
In 2022, the 48th European Rotocraft Forum will be organized on September 6-9 in Winterthur, Switzerland, by ZHAW. The Chairman of the Forum will be professor Pierluigi Capone. The website of the conference is www.erf2022.ch
Programme
During the Forum sessions cover typical aspects of rotorcraft and are held simultaneously in various conference rooms.
Session subjects usually include: Acoustics, Engines & Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics, Aircraft Design, Manufacturing, Aircraft Systems, Avionics, Operational Aspects, Sensors, Test & Evaluation, Airworthiness, Safety, Cost Reduction, Simulation & Training, Crew Station & Human Factors, Structures & Materials and Dynamics.
Social events & technical visits
The forum registration fee includes a welcome reception and the Forum banquet. A programme of sightseeing events for accompanying guests and technical visits for delegates to interesting places in the vicinity of the Forum location is also offered.
English is the official language for the Forum. There is no simultaneous translation during each session.
Best paper award
The Cheeseman Award for Best Paper prepared for and presented at the European Rotorcraft Forum ERF has been established to recognize the author(s) who has/have prepared and presented the most significant technical paper as judged and selected by his/her peers. While the quality of the archived paper is paramount in the selection process, the quality of the presentation of the material at the Forum must also be taken into account. The selected paper is presented at the next Forum of the American Helicopter Society AHS.
The award consists of a plaque from the European Rotorcraft Forum and an honorarium that will pay for travel by one author from a point within Europe to the site of the AHS Forum. The Honorarium is provided by the subject national organizing committee. Complimentary registration and accommodations for the selected author are provided by the AHS.
The Padfield Award has been established to recognize the author(s) not older than 30 years of age who has/have prepared and presented the most significant technical paper as judged and selected by his/her peers. The award consists of a plaque from the European Rotorcraft Forum.
The Chairman’s Award has been established to recognize the author(s) who has/have prepared the most significant technical paper, as judged by the Forum’s Chairman. The selected paper is presented at the next Asian/Australian Rotorcraft Forum. The award consists of a plaque from the European Rotorcraft Forum and an honorarium that will pay for travel by one author from a point within Europe to the site of the AARF. The Honorarium is provided by the subject national organizing committee. Complimentary registration and accommodations for the selected author are provided by the AAR
Proceedings
All registered participants to the ERF will receive a digital copy of all papers presented. Copies of earlier Forum papers can be ordered from the society, responsible for organising the subject event or, after a 2 years embargo, they can be downloaded from the ERF repository at the website https://rotorcraft-forum.eu/.
Copyright
In order to allow: – member societies (on behalf of CEAS) to publish individual papers and/or conference proceedings and/or place papers on the internet.
– authors to have their papers published in one of CEAS Journals and to further use their own material in other publications, below CEAS copyright statement is applicable to each CEAS conference paper.

Publication in CEAS aeronautics journal
The top 10 best papers, being selected on the basis of the paper rating (Cheeseman / Padfield / Chairman award process) by the session chairs, will be proposed for publication in the CEAS journal. These papers will be peer reviewed by members of the CEAS Rotorcraft Committee, being subject matter experts in the field.
