\u2022 Due to his ability of thinking and acting across borders \u2013 countries, subject matters, etc. \u2013 he<\/span>
always managed to bring together a critical mass of the \u201cright\u201d people from the \u201cright\u201d<\/span>
institutions to move forward together.<\/span>
\u2022 He was very successful in bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial<\/span>
development to yield an efficient transfer of scientific progress into product advancements by<\/span>
creating networks to foster cooperation. Even his career path closed the loop from science via<\/span>
industrial R&T to institutional research.<\/span>
\u2022 He advanced technologies such as laminar flow control for aerodynamic drag reduction, always<\/span>
considering the impact on the overall aircraft and the air transport system.<\/span>
\u2022 Joachim Szodruch has authored and co-authored more than 70 publications<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

He launched one of the first large European aeronautical research projects: \u201cELFIN\u201d (European<\/span>
Laminar Flow Investigation) in 1989. He successfully coordinated the associated large-scale, complex<\/span>
wind tunnel tests with hybrid laminar flow wing models as well as flight tests of a laminar part-span<\/span>
wing glove on a Fokker F100 aircraft. Thanks to his profound knowledge and diplomatic skills, he<\/span>
mastered to lead this European cooperation with partners at universities, research establishments<\/span>
and in the industry to a world-wide respected success.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

After some 20 successful years within the aerospace industry, he became member of the Executive<\/span>
Board of DLR and embedded DLR even more into an international network. Together with Fred<\/span>
Abbink (NLR), he fostered the German-Dutch relationship in the field of Air Traffic Management by<\/span>
founding AT-One in 2007. He played a key role in the acquisition of the Airbus A320 \u201cD-ATRA\u201d for<\/span>
the DLR research fleet in 2008 as a modern and flexible flight test platform setting a new benchmark<\/span>
for flying test beds in European aeronautical research. As a very active member and co-chair of<\/span>
EREA,\u00a0and a very passionate co-founder of IFAR, the worldwide network of government-supported<\/span>
aviation research establishments, he actively promoted cooperative aviation research across borders.<\/span><\/p>

Joachim Szodruch became a key player within the activities of ACARE. He was acting as co-chair<\/span>
together with Fran\u00e7ois Quentin for several years and was jointly responsible for the Strategic<\/span>
Research Agenda to achieve the goals of the Vision 2020.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

During his presidency of DGLR he initiated the transition towards a more modern aerospace society<\/span>
with increasing membership. He was and still is quite creative and successful in attracting younger<\/span>
people to aerospace and into the DGLR as part of CEAS. As CEAS president he launched the CEAS<\/span>
Aeronautical and the CEAS Space Journal in 2009. Furthermore, he managed to attract very<\/span>
successful conferences to Germany, e.g. the IAC5 2003 in Bremen, the ICAS congress 2006 in<\/span>
Hamburg, and the first CEAS conference 2007 in Berlin with more than 1000 participants.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Joachim Szodruch was born in Ebingen, South Germany, in the<\/span>
year 1945, but grew up in Berlin.<\/span><\/p>

He graduated from the Technical University Berlin in 1971<\/span>
followed by a post-graduate study at Cambridge University, UK.<\/span><\/p>

1973 \u2013 1977 Scientific assistant at the Aerospace Institute of the Technical University Berlin, where<\/span>
he obtained his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) in 1977.<\/span><\/p>

1978 \u2013 1980 Research Associateship from the National Research Council at NASA Ames<\/span>
Research Center in California, USA.<\/span><\/p>

1981 \u2013 1983 Test Engineer at VFW-Fokker (later on merged to MBB-UT) in Bremen.<\/span><\/p>

1984 \u2013 1990 Programme Manager Aerodynamic Research and Deputy Chief Aerodynamicist at<\/span>
MBB-UT (Messerschmitt-B\u00f6lkow-Blohm Civil Transport Division)\/Deutsche Aerospace<\/span>
Airbus in Bremen.<\/span><\/p>

1991 \u2013 1994 General Manager Research & Technology at Airbus Industries in Toulouse.<\/span><\/p>

Supervisory Board for the two European wind-tunnel organisations DNW (DeutschNiederl\u00e4ndischer Windkanal \/ German-Dutch Windtunnel) and ETW (European<\/span>
Transonic Windtunnel).<\/span><\/p>

Since 2003 Honorary Professor for Aeronautics at Technical University of Berlin.<\/span><\/p>
